NEWSLETTER - 3rd April 2013
Snow, wonderful snow ... well maybe it was the wrong sort in the wrong place in the UK, but Club members have enjoyed a great skiing season so now it's time to prepare and plan for the next one! You'll find the Club's updated calendar of activities on the website - put the dates in your diary now.
Discover Hertfordshire and the Cambridge Cycleway and get roller skiing
For a warm up there's a 10 mile Club walk taking in part of the Hertfordshire way on Sunday 14 April, and if you're looking for a weekend away, Yorkshire Dales Cross Country Ski Club have invited members to their roller ski/cycle weekend in Cambridge on 4-5 May, and our roller ski practice sessions begin again at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit on Sunday 12 May.
Roller ski race opener
Our 15km free technique race opens the London roller ski race series also on Sunday 12 May. [Please note this is the confirmed date for the race and practice session, not 11 May as shown in the latest newsletter.] You can enter the race online now.
Ski Estonia and Finland, and ...
Estonia isn't the first country that springs to mind for cross country skiing but it hosts the Worldloppet Tartu ski marathon and it easily combines with a trip to Finland. Find out more from members Michelle and Kwasi who headed there - you can read about their impressions and tips of this Baltic double. You'll also find a link to a great article from Aussie member John Miller who completed 50 races this year.
Memories of Bessans
The Club's skiing trip to Bessans was a huge success [thanks to Des & Paddy for organising it] and a selection of images have now been posted in the 2013 gallery on our website. Relive the memories or get a flavour of what Club trips are all about, and if you want to see more scroll through the LRNSC Facebook page.
On-snow trips 2013-2014
Demand is already high for the Club trips to the Ski Hall in Oberhof (7-10 November) and to Obertilliach and the Dolomitenlauf (12-20 January 2014). As always, places are filled on a "first come, first served" basis and there are just a few places left on each of the two trips.
Any members wanting to come on either of these very popular trips - both of which will include our usual high-class coaching – please register your interest with Paddy Field as soon as possible.
There are also some places available for members on the Club's trip to the famous Vasaloppet week in Sweden from 19/2-1/3. Please contact Des Goff for more information or to book a place.
Dorney Lake open for roller skiing ...
The good news is that Dorney Lake is open again to the public, which for some LRNSC members means roller skiing. However before setting off do check their website as major rowing/other events seriously fill up the car park. Be aware too that even if an event is not listed at the weekends there will still be rowing going on and that for major events - triathlons etc - there may well be 'entry on the day' security that will stop you getting in.
If you have any stories or photos from your skiing trips do share them with us, and enjoy the new roller skiing season!
