ROLLERSKI NEWSLETTER - 6th September 2011

The build up to the Winter has begun, and over the next few months we will be preparing all kinds of skiers for the season ahead.

Here is our news -

Richmond Park's traffic free day coming up this Sunday, 11th September from 3PM. You can for a rollerski round the whole park, in daylight, with no traffic after the duathlon has finished. This is what it looks like -

- Richmond Park - the last beginners course starts Wednesday, see -
- Dorney - next 1-day course on Sunday 18th September, then 16th October, see -
- Hyde Park - CL course begins this Saturday, see, SK course begins next Tuesday, see ;

We had guest instructors Eric and Heather Woolley (Exodus holidays' top cross-country ski coaches) at the last Dorney course in August, and if you've been to Dorney, and want to get ready for winter, you can join the next Level 2 groups.

Nordic walking is not just walking with sticks. Well, at some level it is, but our instructor Mantas is running a course that covers Nordic Walking in its simplest form, and progresses through to running with poles, bounding and plyometrics - all training embraced by top level cross-country skiers. This is our first ever Nordic Walking course, and begins in Greenwich Park later this month, with discounts for our club regulars and anyone signed up to Autumn courses. See

As mentioned, Posy will be joining the team in October. Not only is she a very decent skier, she is also great fun, with the unmistakable Musgravian sense of humour. We look forward to her getting involved, and you can find out more about her here -

We've had very good initial bookings for our trips on snow next season to Obertilliach and Hochfilzen in Austria. If you'd like to join Alan Eason and his team for a week of coaching, followed by a chance to race, you can reserve your place at -

If you've met me recently you'll no doubt have endured my ranting about the rollerski van, which has just been fitted out. For this I apologise. In an attempt to get it all out of my system, I've written an article about Paddy the Caddy, and its trip to Ireland. See -

I'll very shortly be putting the new Salomon Equipe 10 Skate Skis on sale on the website. I'm expecting Salomon to begin deliveries by the end of October. Unlike last year, this year I have placed a pre-season order, which has secured the stock, and this will mean that I should be well stocked with skis throughout the 2011/12 season.

After a long absence, we're again selling aluminium poles. The KV+ Alu pole, which makes up the majority of our teaching stock, has impressed us greatly with their robustness. These are available individually or as upgrades to our packages. Although aluminium poles are considerably heavier than carbon poles, they are relatively indestructable, making them good for beginners worried about breakages.

You can order the poles at -

If you are hoping to ski faster this winter, I'd recommend one of the upcoming rollerski races highly enough. This month in London there is the 'London Pursuit' which is a 7.5k classic leg followed by a 7.5k skating leg. Next month is the London 4-hour race / event - it's really a distance challenge and the organisers, LRNSC, will record your total distance (although you are allowed to stop and rest along the way).

On 23rd October, the grand finale of the rollerski race season is the Wessex Sprints, which is always a big focus for our racing oriented skiers. This year we'll take a large team to take part in the individual 3k / 6k / 9k individual races and the 4x 3k relay races. There are different distances for novices and different age groups, and there is always a great atmosphere and a warm West-country welcome. For more racing info see -

Andrew Musgrave is again in the news, this time being highlighted in the newsletter of FIS, the world governing body for cross-country skiing (and roller skiing). See -,2379.html

There are some good pictures of last month's FIS Rollerski World Championships in Norway here -

SPARTAN RACE - proving biathletes can adapt to other sports -
AUSTRALIA SKI MARATHON - a report on the Australia Hoppet ski marathon, held last week -
SKI WALKING / BOUNDING - in advance of Mantas's course (but without poles) -

Hope you've found this interesting / useful.

Please let me know if you've any questions or comments,

Best regards,
