October 2013

Winter's on its way...

...skiing and snow, just around the corner.

The world's best skiers can currently be found on rollerskis, preparing for the season ahead.  We're stepping up a gear too, getting ready for the demands and excitement of XC ski challenges.

There's certainly plenty going on.  Our new sessions start shortly in Cambridge and Essex, the 'Team Dorney' group is getting going, and Hyde Park is really abuzz with rollerskiing on Saturday mornings - both club and beginners.

Our team of instructors have been coming up with new innovations for the season, taking inspiration and knowledge of the latest developments from coaches of the GB and Lithuanian cross-country teams, among others.  (Mantas brought a lot of new 'torture' equipment back from Lithuania this Summer...)

We hope you can join us - come and get ready for Winter 2013-4.

Courses coming up -

The big news is our first ever Cambridge course, beginning next week. It will have 2 groups, skating style  -

Cambridge - begins next Wednesday
Redbridge - first course, Sunday
Hyde Park - course starts 2 November
Hyde Park Club - every Saturday AM
Dorney - next courses 3 & 17 November
Team Dorney - all season long training

Redbridge (pictured right) is our new venue in 'The East', featuring some of the best tarmac around.

Shop - new kit

New this month are some devices for softening the impact from poling, see here.  Not massively exciting to look at, but they make rollerski poling a bit more snow-like.

We've also got plenty of Craft rollerski / cross-country ski socks, which are really good value, see - here.

At the moment we're currently fully stocked with rollerski kit (rollerskis, boots, poles etc).  Also we have most cross-country skis in stock, except the top S-Lab Skate and Classic skis, which we order in specially.

See our shop.

GB Nordic Team

Everyone is really getting behind our Olympic cross-country skiers this year.  The athletes are strong, and they have good backup.  One intriguing initiative is 'Crowdfunding', which is a great way to help, see here.

On-snow training & Alan Eason

Our trips are booking up again, and we've added the famous Dobbiaco to Cortina ski marathon to our  programme of coaching plus ski marathon racing.  The trips are as good for first-time skiers in need of transitional coaching on snow (after having rollerskied), as for more seasoned skiers looking to upgrade technique.  See - here.
Our coach, Alan, will be back in early November to instruct rollerski beginners' and club sessions in London and Dorney, before heading onto snow.  See here.

Charity skiing

We prepare skiers for all kinds of Winter challenges, including ski holidays and ski marathons.  We have a small number of folk training for charity events, such as the Kids' Company Arctic Biathlon and the Walk-the-Walk Arctic Marathon.  This is a way of combining a good holiday with fundraising for charitable causes, see - here.

Private lessons

Several of our instructors are available for private rollerski lessons during the week.  You can contact them directly, or through me -

Mantas - London, Cambs, Milton Keynes
Felicity - London, Oxfordshire, Dorney
Adam - Victoria Park, E. London
Katya - Dorney Lake, evenings & w ends

Prices are here.

Other Stuff...

Thanks for the support for the idea of Cambridge sessions in the last newsletter.  Because of this there'll be two Cambridge courses this Autumn, and hopefully a regular Cambridge presence in the New Year.  If you have any ideas for sessions, let me know.  We're a very pro-active group of instructors, who love to teach.

The 'Go Rollerski' Sportivate sessions are still on the cards, and hopefully I'll have more news on these soon.  I've been slowed down by all the other new sessions and associated work.  But busy is good, and so it's been a great start to the Autumn so far, great to see new people coming in and to welcome back old faces.

And finally, some other news -

A good report from British teenage biathlon star Robert Sircus, settling into life in an elite Norwegian biathlon high school - here.

Video: training with Norwegian biathlete Tora Berger, in Obertilliach - here.

Skip back 33 years, vintage skiing (and rollerskiing at 2 min 40 secs) - here.

Plyometrics for skate skiing video (don't try without a very good warmup) - here

Good rollerskiing + skiing!
