A Vist to Stoke for Chemmy Alcott

Stoke Ski Centre hosted the Stoke Club National recently, with some exciting competition seeing some close finishing times and producing winning performances from Minis Charley Fellows (TEL); Oliver Weeks (MID) and also for Hannah Bozier (ASR ASR) and James Sieber (ASR AMB).

The newly refurbished clubhouse at Stoke, has bought interest from lots of people, both old and new members, getting them back to ski and socialise. One of which was British female number one alpine ski racer, Chemmy Alcott, invited to the event by the centre, which on the announcement, initiated another forty entries to the race!

Stephen Ward of Stoke Ski Centre said; ‘Chemmy was absolutely fantastic, she took time to speak to everyone and made the whole day very special for us all at Stoke Ski Centre’.

Chemmy gave encouragement to all racers, signing a number of autographs and donating her signed world cup bib to go on show in the club lodge café bar.

Thanks to their sponsors, Stoke Ski Centre have produced a video of this fantastic day which can be seen here

Snowsport England Launches Own Insurance Scheme

Snowsport England, the governing body for snowsports in England, has launched a new travel insurance scheme specifically designed to meet the needs of its coaches and competitive snowsport athletes. It also covers your normal recreational skier as well.

The policies can be bought online via a secure website www.snowsportenglandinsurance.com or over the telephone on + 44 (0)1732 853 192

You can arrange cover for one, two or all three of these categories:

·         PERFORMER - covers race training & racing in FIS and BASS races and because many Performers are under 18, there's cover for accompanied travel as a minor. Suitable for Freestyle, Snowboard & Nordic too.

·         COACH / INSTRUCTOR / ASCL - covers courses (including course fees) and working as an instructor, coach or ACL.

·         RECREATIONAL - Automatically covered, it includes off-piste skiing with or without a guide and you can select up to £2,000 cover for your equipment and personal possessions. Of course, you don't have to always be on snow - your policy will also cover other types of trip like summer mountain biking, watersports or just lazing under the sun.

Tim Fawke, Chief Executive of Snowsport England said

"Finding travel insurance that caters for ski racing, freestyle skiing and snowboarding competition, has been a bug bear of athletes for many years so we decided to approach the insurance market and organise our own scheme. Our main focus was to be able to offer our performers, coaches and alpine ski course leaders, an insurance scheme that specifically covered the activities they would be taking part in while abroad. Many of our racers are still minors so it was also important to offer them the ability to have a policy in their own right for when going on club trips without their parents. For coaches we have ensured that course fees are included within the cancellation cover. "

Mike Welby, Director of Dogtag who arranged the scheme and built the transactional website, said

"We are delighted to be working with Snowsport England and believe we have created a product that fits the detailed brief that was formulated over a series of meetings. Our key objective was to ensure that policyholders could be certain that they are covered to take part in their particular activity and also to deliver at a price that is competitive. We are particularly pleased that Snowsport England are going to plough much of the commission income back into funding the sport."

Third New Development Officer for Snowsport England!

Hello! I am Debbie Groom, the new Snowsports Development Officer for Central England.

I have already met some and I’m very much looking forward to meeting more of you to continue the good work already being done with both clubs and facilities!

I have been passionately involved in a variety of sports from a very young age, playing at both local and county level. My experience includes working within the private sector, within education as a Sports Development Officer and School Sport Coordinator, in the media and in volunteering as a coach for a range of clubs, more recently leading running groups for Run in England.

I learnt to ski over fifteen years ago on Skewbridge dry slope, in Rushden and have continued to ski recreationally since then, knowing the immense satisfaction that can be gained out of snowsport.

I am excited about working as part of the sports development team to deliver our NGB Whole Sport Plan 2009 – 2013.

Snowsport England is Moving
Snowsport England move office to SportPark Loughborough

An exciting phase in the long history of Snowsport England  (formerly the English Ski Council)  will take place this summer. The head office, which has been based in council premises above the area  Library in Halesowen since the organisation began in 1979,  will move to Sports Park in Loughborough, part of the Loughborough University complex. The move has come about due to the Council lease expiring on the current office and their wishing to re utilise these for themselves.  Following this the Board looked upon this as an opportunity to review future office requirements, the organisations needs and where should it be located to best deliver for the sport and our membership.

This is a great opportunity for Snowsport England to enhance its operations and culture, creating  a more dynamic organisation within  the current economic environment.

It will also raise our profile with other National Governing Bodies and give us the ability to learn from, and interact with, other sports . It will involve a steep learning curve and I hope all members will help with the challenge ahead.

The move will happen in August /September time and more details will be given out once this has been finalised. Your support is essential in helping to develop Snowsport England into a modern National Governing Body.

With this change in location for the office there is going to be a change in the staffing. We have gone through a consultation period with the office staff and due to the distance of the move it is with deep regret that none of the office staff will be relocating to the new office. This is a disappointment as they have contributed to the development of Snowsport England and have been very loyal to the organisation. In particular I would like to thank Jenny who has been with the organisation for over 20 years and knows an awful lot of the members individually.  They all do a fantastic job which has been challenging over recent months with all the uncertainty placed on them due to the office move. The current staff will finish on the 16th September.
