Snowsport England

Welcome to the December issue of the Piste Extra. In the run up to the 2011/2012 winter season we have had a busy time with the London and British Ski Shows, the launch of our new participation programme GO SKI GO BOARD and the Snowsport England Club and Volunteer Awards.

We would also like to welcome our new Supporter Members to Snowsport England.

Snowsport England Update

Time to Reflect on the 2011 Ski and Snowboard Shows

This year Snowsport England attended two of the Ski and Snowboard shows, The British Ski and Snowboard show held in Birmingham and for the first time the London Ski and Snowboard Show.

The London Ski and Snowboard Show

Snowsport England joined British Ski and Snowboard on a stand at the London Show. The 2011 show was a trial for the NGB having never attended this one before and to discover if we should be attending with more of an impact in future years.

The aim of attending was to raise awareness of Snowsport England as the National Governing Body and that you can take part in England at our many clubs and English facilities. As well it was a great time to meet some of the clubs and people already involved. This was helped by the show having an area dedicated to UK Snowsports, the UK Pavilion a new addition for 2011.

The show was a success for Snowsport England with many new people discovering us and finding out about their local Snowsport destinations.

Susie Moore commented "It was fantastic to talk to so many new people who just weren't aware of the clubs we have in England. As well, it was a great opportunity to meet face to face with some of the clubs and regular participants."

The British Ski and Snowboard Show

Returning to the British Show this year we had a slightly different aim in mind, and launched our new national participation programme GO SKI GO BOARD as well as our Supporter Membership.
It was overwhelming and very exciting to see the huge amount of interest the GO SKI GO BOARD programme received. We are now taking this momentum forward to bring more people into the sport through the programme. Please see GO SKI GO BOARD for more information and get involved.

A thank-you and welcome must go out to all who joined us at the show through our New Supporter Membership.

Thank-you to all who visited us on the Snowsport England stands, we had two successful shows! We enjoyed seeing some of you again as well as meeting some new faces.

Spotlight - Dave Ryding British Apline Team Member

Name: Dave Ryding

Role: British Senior Alpine Team member & GB Olympic Skiier 2010

Disapline: Slalom and Giant Slalom

Dave Ryding is one of Great Britain's most talented Skiing Athletes, part of the British Senior Alpine Team and competing on the World Stage, he has come a long way since learning to ski at his local dry slope with Pendle Ski Club and just keeps on improving.

Looking back at his early days Dave commented "when I was eight, I was whizzing down the slopes at the French Alps resort of Samoans like a natural, I loved it!!!! I was always the first back on the lifts to go down again."

Since he first started to race on the dry slope circuit at the age of 8 he progressed to racing on snow later than most at the age of 12. With successes in his racing and showing true passion and drive he made it on to England Ski Team at the age of 16.

During the 2006 season Dave competed as part of the British Development team, became the overall  Junior Champion and was selected for the British Senior Alpine Ski Team.
His first real taste of top competition came in 2009 at the World Championships in Val D'isere.

In January 2010 he was honoured to represent Great Britain as part of Team GB in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, finishing 27th in the Men's Slalom and 47th in the Men's Giant Slalom. This was very much a stepping stone in his career and has added to his motivation and desire to reach the top of the sport

The 2011 winter season proved to be his most successful yet. Taking part in the World Championship he placed a respectable 39th in the Giant Slalom, in the Europa Cup Slaloms Dave managed to be placed in the top 20 twice, he was 3rd in the Slovenian National Slalom Championships and 2nd in the Hungarian National Slalom Championships before going on to Win the British Slalom and Giant slalom titles in Meribel.

Dave has used the summer training period to continue to raise his fitness levels to ever new heights and improve his technique. This is already showing its benefits with a 6th in the NC Slalom at Coronet Peak, a southern hemisphere event on 3rd September with 17.73 FIS points.

Good Luck for the 2011/2012 Northern Hemisphere Season. Dave is currently in Norway for the First Europa Cup.

Highlight Of The Month

A Night of Celebration at the 2011 Club and Volunteer Awards

Snowsport England held their annual Club and Volunteer Awards on Saturday 29th October at the British Ski and Snowboard show. The Snowsport England Sport Development team hosted the event to recognise the amazing work that snowsport clubs and their volunteers have put in over the past year.

The awards took place in the Ski Club Lounge and we were grateful to be joined by MP for High Peaks Andrew Bingham, a representative from the Parlimentary Sports Fellowship Team, a Sport England programme which works to build a better understanding of sport within Parliament and a stronger partnership between the worlds of sport and politics.

Andrew Bingham presented awards in six categories. Winners received a trophy and a £200 voucher courtesy of Ski Bartlett and the first runners up were awarded certificates.

Breaking News

The clocks have gone back and Christmas is fast approaching, how time flies. Before we know it, it will be February and time for the premier event in the English Calendar, The 16th English Alpine Championships. Once again we will be returning to the wonderful and friendly town of Bormio, Italy. Which is already preparing for the coming season, snow has already fallen on the upper slopes, and no doubt training and racing will begin soon.

Many thanks to Steffano Cassin and Energiapura for their continuing support as our main Sponsor. Steffano will be in resort during the Championships, so do take the opportunity to speak with him about equipment and clothing.
