English Alpine Champs' 2013 - Get the date in the Diary

It is with great pleasure that we can announce the English Alpine Championships will be returning to Bormio for 2013.  The dates will be from Sunday 17th February until Saturday 23rd February.  Whilst we understand that this does not fit in with all school half-term holidays, it does fit in with the majority.

Bormio have their Carnival the week before including the 16th and 17th February and therefore the programme for 2013 will change. This is currently being agreed with Bormio. As soon as we can confirm it, we will publish on the Snowsport England and the Events website

Want to find out more about Telemark Skiing?

Midland Telemark Club are holding an evening for new and existing members to learn more about the coaching and instructing route for Telemark and experiencing practical experience of the latest thinking on the disciplines.

Monday 14th May 8pm. For more info contact debbie@snowsportengland.org.uk

What is Telemark Skiing?

The Telemark turn is the original and oldest way to turn skis where one ski then the other is advanced in front of the other. Long ago, when skis were solid wood, very much longer and very difficult to turn, this technique in effect created one long ski with a variable radius and it was the only technique to change the direction of your skis without lifting them out of the snow and stepping them round.

If you haven't seen anyone telemarking it looks something like a series of curtsies whilst stepping down the slope. Try walking downstairs in a zig-zag, changing direction on each step and you'll get the idea. For anyone new to skiing this stepping forwards can feel very natural and stable.
