ROLLERSKI NEWSLETTER - 11th June 2010

JUNE NEWS AND PROGRAMME

It's been a while since the last newsletter - we had a hugely busy Winter / Spring, and I've been spending much time since then re-organising... The Winter Olympics seemed to kick-start an interest in cross-country skiing / rollerskiing which has kept us well occupied.

As ever, the Summer offers great opportunities for training and building the foundations of fitness, strength and winter performance. The rollerski racing season has just begun and now is the time to get in plenty of miles (many of our Hyde Park / Richmond Park club rollerskied from Bath to Bristol a few weeks ago, and other tours are taking place across the country). It's also a great time to hone technique and get into good habits for Autumn training.

Alan Eason and I have been teaching Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton to rollerski - much to the delight of the kids in Dulwich Park - and she will be taking part in the Cairngorm Hill Climb rollerski race in Scotland in September. We've added extra evening sessions in Hyde Park and Richmond Park, with Dorney sessions returning in August. Snowsport England also has courses coming up across the country, for skiers interested in racing. For information on this and more, read on >>>

SUMMER BEGINNERS' COURSE

Hyde Park 4-week rollerski course, starting Tuesday 22 June, 18.05. This course will be Skating Technique, to join go to http://rollerski.co.uk/events2.html.

CLASSES - RICHMOND PARK, HYDE PARK

We've added regular evening sessions in Richmond Park on Wednesdays, to our programme of regular sessions in Hyde Park on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings. It's a great time of the year to be skiing in the evenings and London's parks are a nice place to be. To book, see http://rollerski.co.uk/class.html.

DORNEY AUGUST AND AUTUMN

Our Dorney courses resume on Sunday 29th August (Dorney's pretty well booked over the summer). You can see all our Autumn course dates at http://rollerski.co.uk/events.html. If you can't wait until then, you should check out:

SNOWSPORT ENGLAND'S coaching weekends in London, Durham and Lancaster: http://rollerski.co.uk/nr082.html.

ROLLERSKI RACING - AUGUST PURSUIT RACE

This summer we'll be running a rollerski race at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit, West London. The format is of a 'pursuit' - 7.5k classic technique, followed by 7.5k skating technique, with a shorter distance for beginners and juniors. Racing is a great way to improve, and is the best training for racing on snow, and we'd encourage all to get involved. To enter, go to http://rollerski.co.uk/nx042.html.

The rollerski racing season builds up as the winter approaches, and we've been set the target of bringing 50 racers to the 'Wessex Sprints' race at Castle Combe, at the end of October! I'm hopeful we can do this... You can see the full rollerski racing calendar at - http://rollerski.co.uk/ns033.html.

TECHNIQUE DVD

If you'd like some more ideas on technique, I'd recommend this DVD on 'Technique Progressions' - http://rollerski.co.uk/techprog.html. When Alan Eason saw this DVD he said 'they've stolen my ideas'! It's a very well structured resource, with sections on rollerskis, dryland and on snow, for both classic and skating. It's well worth getting, especially if you can't make regular coaching sessions.

SKIROLLER BARTHELMES ROLLERSKIS - SR01

We've recently taken delivery of new SRB SR01 skating rollerskis. These are slightly quicker than standard Marwe 610C training rollerskis, and have some different characteristics, which make them very interesting. Snow is not one consistent speed, and so it's always worth training on rollerskis of different speeds. GB skier, Andrew Young, wrote the following report on them - http://rollerski.co.uk/nr081.html.

KV+ ROLLERSKI 'SILENT TIP'

KV+ has developed a new 'Silent Tip' rollerski tip, which takes much of the noise and vibration out of rollerski poling, and gives a more snow-like feel to rollerskiing. As a new technology, these are unfortunately still a bit expensive, but well worth it if you value a gentler workout. See - http://rollerski.co.uk/buypoles.html.

MARWE NEW CLASSIC ROLLERSKIS

Marwe have recently updated their classic rollerski, with the ski component now more similar to modern snow-skis. The new 700C will be available from the beginning of July, and we have reduced the price of the old model. You can order them here: http://rollerski.co.uk/buyrollerskis.html.

CRAFT KIT

We have chosen Craft Clothing to kit out our instructors and our London club. If all goes well, we'll be stocking Craft cross-country ski kit from this Autumn. Craft is the leading manufacturer of cross-country ski kit, and other technical sports clothing, and is a sponsor of many World Cup athletes and ski races. It's the only cross-country ski clothing maker with a serious presence in the UK, and is a supplier to the British Canoe Union and a growing number of runners. For more information on Craft, see http://www.craft.se.

NEW RENTAL EQUIPMENT

We've recently replaced our entire stock of rental poles, and have plans to replace our boots with 2011 Pro Combi Pilot boots in September. We have new classic rollerskis on order, so come Autumn we'll be pretty much fully re-stocked with equipment for beginners to use.

SKI MARATHON REPORTS

It seems a very long time ago now, but in March we had over 70 rollerskiers take part in the Vasaloppet and Engadin Ski Marathons. It was great to see everyone do so well, and hear how they got on. We've added some reports / pictures here: http://rollerski.co.uk/nf016.html.

GB NORDIC SKI TEAM SUCCESS

The GB Cross-Country Skiers did phenomenally well at the Olympics. It was their first appearance since 1994, and they recorded the best ever performance in British cross-country skiing history, Andrew Musgrave's 8.73% behind the winner in the 10k Free Technique. Andrew would also have been Norwegian Junior cross-country ski champion (had he been Norwegian!) finishing first in the 10k Free Technique race at Norway's junior nationals. See http://rollerski.co.uk/nx039.html.

Despite this, the team's future is in doubt. Following the collapse of Snowsport GB, the limited funding seems to be again gravitating towards Alpine, and commercial sponsors are hard to get in Nordic (there are not so many influential business people interested in cross-country...nor were the people inside Snowsport GB ever really chasing Nordic sponsors). But the team itself is positive, and the athletes and coaches have learnt to achieve much with very limited resources!

ROLLERSKIING IN SCHOOLS

We have just reached agreement to bring rollerskiing into two schools in South West London, starting next Autumn. Rollerskiing will be offered as a games option to students alongside rugby and hockey. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first rollerski programme to be brought into schools, at least in England! The programme is being run by Felicity Bertram, who's been very successful in introducing the Richmond Park juniors club (see http://rollerski.co.uk/events30.html).

ALAN EASON ON-SNOW INSTRUCTION

Alan Eason - Britain's top cross-country ski instructor - has launched a website to promote his on-snow cross-country ski trips. Dates for next season's trips have been announced and more information will follow shortly. Alan is much in demand and runs trips and courses for us, ski clubs, holiday companies and the British military. For more information see: http://www.totallynordic.co.uk.

TECHNIQUE & TRAINING INFORMATION

I've been adding lots of links and information on training to the Facebook site, so won't repeat them here. You can see all of this at http://www.facebook.com/pages/London-Cross-Country-Ski-Club/109118512973. Do become a 'fan' if you like!

Best regards,
Iain
