ROLLERSKI NEWSLETTER - 28th July 2011

Plenty going on in the world of rollerskiing. Although summer is a bit quieter for teaching, it's a busy time for planning and preparing for the approaching autumn, and it's a good time for getting the base training for the winter.

Read on for news of our upcoming rollerski programme, which takes off again in September. We also have news on our ski trips in 2012, racing, the GB cross-country ski team and other bits and pieces.

SKI HOLIDAYS 2012
Next year we'll be running three cross-country ski trips on snow: Obertilliach, Austria and the Pustertaler Ski Marathon; Hochfilzen, Austria and the Koasalauf Ski Marathon and Pontresina, Switzerland and the Engadin Skimarathon.

Alan Eason and his team are great teachers. See http://rollerski.co.uk/cross.html for more details, and http://rollerski.co.uk/feedback.html for comment on the 2011 trips.

AUTUMN R'SKIING
We step up our rollerski programme each Autumn, with more courses in September than any other month.

Our first course at Dorney Lake is on Sunday 21st August. Then Dorney returns as a monthly / twice monthly fixture, see http://rollerski.co.uk/events3.html

September allows the last evening rollerskiing of the year, before it gets too dark. We'll have two 4-week courses -
HYDE PARK - 4-wk SK rollerskiing - from Tuesday 6th September, 18.15, see http://rollerski.co.uk/events2.html
RICHMOND PARK - 4 wk CL rollerskiing - from Wednesday 7th September, 18.30, see http://rollerski.co.uk/events9.html

We'll have a 4-wk Saturday AM rollerski course for classic technique, beginning 10th September, see http://rollerski.co.uk/events1.html

NORDIC WALKING / RUNNING / BOUNDING PICS
Cross-country skiers have long used poles when running, to immitate the cross-country ski technique. This is a very important part of training. Here are some pictures of a recent Nordic walking / running session in London's Greenwich Park - http://rollerski.co.uk/gallery30.html We will be organising some Sunday AM Greenwich Nordic walking / running sessions again in the Autumn (details to follow...)

BRITISH ROLLERSKI CHAMPIONSHIPS
The GB Rollerski Championships took place earlier this month in London. The event was attended by nearly 50 skiers, from across the UK, with top honours going to Fiona Hughes of the Yorkshire Dales and Calum Irvine of the Cairngorm Biathlon & Nordic Ski Club (both on the GB team). You can see results here - http://rollerski.co.uk/results_gb_champs.html

There are more rollerski races coming up in England including the London Pursuit (15k classic, 15k skate), London 4-hour race and Wessex Sprints at Castle Combe. You can find a calendar here - http://rollerski.co.uk/ns033.html - all are suitable for novice racers, and are good training for any ski-marathoner.

NEW EQUIPMENT FOR SUMMER & AUTUMN
We have introduced some new equipment lately. Leki Vario poles join our range and we have just launched a new generation of Skike multi-terrain rollerskis. We plan to introduce Salomon's top Equipe 10 Skating Cross-Country skis for the Winter. For more information on this, see http://rollerski.co.uk/nr096.html

NORTHUG & HELLNER OPEN FOR USAIN BOLT
Petter Northug (NOR) and Marcus Hellner (SWE) were the opening act for Usain Bolt at the Bislett Games athletics meeting in Oslo last month. The Olympic and World Champions did a rollerski race on the athletics track, see - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXILd2oW_9k

SSE ROLLERSKI INSTRUCTION COURSES
The next SSE Level 1 and Level 2 Roller Ski Instructor Course will be held at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit, Hayes on 13-14 August with Mike Dixon and Adam Pinney as tutors. Revalidations are also being held on 14th August. For more information, contact Helen Bell, Snowsport England's Nordic Coaching director - helenbell115@btinternet.com Once you have qualified as an instructor, you also need to do a First Aid course, Safeguarding Children Course and CRB check before you can be issued with a license.

Snowsport England has recently re-designed its website, which can be found at - http://www.snowsportengland.org.uk

PICS FROM THE PAST
The first ski trips we arranged for rollerskiers was to Sjusjoen Norway, way back in 2006-7. Here is an article published in the local newspaper - http://www.rollerski.co.uk/gallery17.html

(ANOTHER) DOUBLE POLING MACHINE
Hot on the heels of the Concept II SkiErg is the improbably named 'Thorax Trainer' - Denmark's answer to the question of training when you have no snow. Here it is - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uj2kdzP-DpE& These machines are good training for races like the Vasaloppet, which feature a lot of double poling, and this machine can also do single poling.

BNDS REPORT
The British Nordic Development Squad has published a report on its 2011 season. This small team is remarkably successful. You can read their news here (PDF) - http://www.teambss.org.uk/media/52737/british%20nordic%20development%20squad%20end%20of%20season%20report.pdf
