ROLLERSKI NEWSLETTER - 9th April 2013
Spring brings a chance to rollerski in more daylight, and (we hope) warmer conditions. Now is the time to enjoy evening rollerski sessions on softer tarmac.
This week we make a return to Richmond Park with evening and weekend sessions, and we start new sessions in South Oxfordshire. We'll have something regular happening 5 days a week between now and the end of June, and it will be our busiest Spring to date.
As well as our sessions, Snowsport England will be running several coaching days over the Summer, and the London rollerski racing begins in a month's time. There are plenty of opportunities to become a better skier in this pre-Winter Olympic year!
CLUB PLANS - SPRING / SUMMER
Our regular club in Hyde Park is building up for the Summer season, and you can find our programme here - http://rollerski.co.uk/clubprog.html
If you're keen to build up your performance and technique, this is the place to be.
COURSES COMING UP
We have a small number of 4-week courses coming up, aimed mainly at beginners -
And a beginner / advanced coruse at Dorney Lake -
(We will run other 1-day courses at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit and Hyde Park this Spring, and will be back at Dorney Lake late August).
RETURN OF RICHMOND ROLLERSKIING - OUTDOOR FITNESS COLLECTIVE
Rollerskiing returns to Richmond Park on Tuesday evenings, and some Saturday afternoons, under the auspices of the 'Outdoor Fitness Collective'. We'll be providing the rollerskiing, but booking is through the OFC website. The OFC is a newly launced 'multi-sport' organisation based on land and river around Richmond in SW London.
It is the brainchild of Jonathan Bramley, an advertising guru who lives in nearby Sheen. He has brought together a variety of outdoor sports, ranging from kayaking to kettle-bells, all run by experienced local coaches. The idea is to get out of gyms, and enjoy exercising outdoors in nature. You can find out more at - http://www.outdoorfitnesscollective.co.uk/
ROLLERSKI SOUTH OXFORDSHIRE
We are also teaming up with South Oxforshire District Council, to provide 'taster' rollerski sessions in Wallingford as part of their Get Oxfordshire Active scheme. You can find more information here - http://rollerski.co.uk/nr123.html
Other venues will follow, and we hope to create a regular group in Oxfordshire.
We have some great new items on sale for Summer 2013 -
We also have a full range of Alpina Summer Rollerski boots coming into stock next week - to make warm-weather training more comfortable.
All the London races take place at the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit, and are well worth doing if you plan to race on snow. Race organisers the London Region Nordic Ski Club put on a good event, with chipped timing equipment which ensures timing accuracy.
SKI MARATHON CONGRATS
Well done to everyone who took part in the recent ski marathons. The past season saw a big increase in the number of British ski marathon-ers, and it was great to see so many rollerski-trained racers on the result lists. 153 British racers took part in the Engadin Skimarathon, which was run in beautiful conditions. Our on-snow coach, Alan Eason was the fastest Brit in a time of 1hr 41mins, and I managed 2hrs 3mins (a sub 2-hour time is proving elusive). You can see the British results here - http://services.datasport.com/2013/winter/esm/esmrang/LANDGB.HTM
E MIDLANDS CLUB
Two of our Dorney regulars are at the initial stages of setting up an East Midlands Cross-Country Ski / Rollerski Club. Mark and Michele Smith would be interested in making contact with potential members, and can be reached via their Facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/NordicSkiEastMidlands
Or let me know, and I'll put you in touch.
GB SKI TEAM UPDATE
With the 2014 Winter Olympics looming, there is great sense of optimism in the GB cross-country ski team. The team performed very well at the recent World Championships, which is entertainingly recounted in athlete Andrew Young's blog (forgive his English - he is currently living in Norwegian...) - http://ayoungxcskier.blogspot.co.uk/
Andrew's sister Posy - who's one of our instructors in London - has also been skiing well this season and is currently GB's #1 female skier.
